New Mexico Acequia Commission: Uniting Communities, Preserving Tradition

Governor Lujan Grisham approves special registration plate in support of acequias and community ditch associates.

SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico Acequia Commission (NMAC) is proud to announce a significant milestone in its ongoing mission to promote and protect the invaluable acequia systems that sustain our communities. In a groundbreaking move during the 2023 legislative session, the Commission secured the approval of a specialized acequia license plate, designed to raise awareness and support for these vital irrigation networks that have shaped New Mexico’s rich agricultural heritage.

Acequias, a centuries-old irrigation system derived from Spanish colonial settlers, have played an integral role in the sustainability and prosperity of New Mexico’s agricultural landscape. These meticulously engineered waterways are not only a testament to the ingenuity of our ancestors but continue to serve as a lifeline for countless communities across the state.

Recognizing the need for increased awareness and funding for the maintenance and preservation of these historical landmarks, the New Mexico Acequia Commission has decided to involve the community in the logo design for the dedicated plate. The NMAC invites citizens from across the state to compete and submit their best acequia-artwork that captures the essence of our shared cultural legacy.

“For over 500 years, acequias have been part of New Mexico’s history and critical infrastructure for water sharing,” stated Ralph Vigil II, Chairman of the New Mexico Acequia Commission. “As we continue to face challenges with water preservation and climate change, we must acknowledge the role that acequias play in maintaining the health and resilience of New Mexico.”

The acequia license plate will offer a tangible way for New Mexicans to show their support for the acequia communities, while also providing a platform to spark conversations about the importance of sustainable agriculture and water stewardship.

The proceeds from the sale of the acequia license plates will be directed towards the Acequia and Community Ditch Fund (ACDF) The fund was established to provide financial assistance for acequia and community ditch systems. The ACDF help’s New Mexico’s future through the adjudication of water rights.
